August 6, 1958-
The first meeting of the Albuquerque Jeep Herders was called to order with
twenty people present. J. M. Fowler was elected president. |

The first club run
was to Capillo Peak in the Manzano Mountains. |
 |
The goal of the
club when it formed was “to contribute to such cases as conservation and civil
defense through the use of jeeps.” |
 |
What was happening in 1958: |

Elvis Presley
joined the Army, NASA was formed, Average income was $4,650, Bread was $0.19,
A dozen eggs were $0.56, Gas was $0.24, A new Jeep CJ-6 was $1,904, A new
Dodge Power Wagon was $2,966. |
32 years ago:

August 8, 1976-
The club changed its name to the New Mexico 4-Wheelers. Mike Beltran was the
president of the club. |

The reason for the
name change “was to encourage potential new members who have the misconception
that one must own a Jeep to be a Jeep Herder and to sooth anti-Jeep feelings
among friendly competitors.” |
 |
What was happening in 1976: |

Company is formed, The

& 2 landers successfully land on
Mars,
Average income was $11,800, Bread was $0.30, A dozen eggs were $0.77, Gas was
