50 years ago:

August 6, 1958- The first meeting of the Albuquerque Jeep Herders was called to order with twenty people present. J. M. Fowler was elected president.

The first club run was to Capillo Peak in the Manzano Mountains.

The goal of the club when it formed was “to contribute to such cases as conservation and civil defense through the use of jeeps.”

What was happening in 1958:

Elvis Presley joined the Army, NASA was formed, Average income was $4,650, Bread was $0.19, A dozen eggs were $0.56, Gas was $0.24, A new Jeep CJ-6 was $1,904, A new Dodge Power Wagon was $2,966.

 32 years ago:

August 8, 1976- The club changed its name to the New Mexico 4-Wheelers. Mike Beltran was the president of the club.

The reason for the name change “was to encourage potential new members who have the misconception that one must own a Jeep to be a Jeep Herder and to sooth anti-Jeep feelings among friendly competitors.”

Apple Computer Company is formed, The Viking 1 & 2 landers successfully land on Mars, Average income was $11,800, Bread was $0.30, A dozen eggs were $0.77, Gas was $0.57, A new Jeep CJ-7 was $5,195, A new Ford Bronco was $4,979.
