For those not quite capable to go on Mt. Blanca, I will lead the Medano Pass trail that is in the exact same area. We will camp at the Great Sand Dunes National Park as the run starts there.
This is an easy trail this time of year and is quite scenic. It goes through the sand and then up over a mountain pass, crossing the creek in several places. It is beautiful! You will want to prepare for snow, rain and hot temperatures as the weather Gods can throw it all at you this time of year. Bring along your camera, lunch, and proper clothing. You will have fun!
The Campgrounds can accommodate all kinds of camping (ie...motorhomes, trailers, tents, and sleeping out under the stars). For those that prefer indoor accomodations, there is a lodge just outside the National Park, and other motels are available in Alamosa, CO. I think the campground is first-come-first-served this time of year, so probably can't do reservations. However, I do not believe it is an issue on the weekend AFTER Labor Day. Joan and I will be there Friday nigtt. The run is on Saturday. Hope you can make it!
Meet at the Great Sand Dunes Visitor's Center 9:00 AM, Saturday morning, September 6,2014. The Visitor's Center has a large parking lot with restrooms and opens at 9:00 AM.
