Disclaimers and Other Legal Stuff:
This isn't meant to scare anyone off, but in all facets of life, things happen that piss people off, and those people often try to blame other people.  So please pay close attention.  First of all, everything on this page is subject to change without notice!  The latest information will be posted here whenever possible, but changes may occur at the last minute (or even during the ride/event) due to weather, mechanical problems, time constraints, or anything else "Murphy" may throw out at us.  The trail leader always has the last word, so if in any doubt, contact the listed trail leader.  Also, the trail ride/event begins at the meeting location listed below; not at the trailhead, not at such-'n-such intersection, not anywhere else.  So if you intend to meet up with us anywhere except for the designated meeting location and no one shows up, that's your problem.  Something may have changed and you weren't at the meeting location to get the word.  Next, come prepared.  At a minimum, your vehicle should have tow points, both front and rear.  That way if you get stuck, we can pull you out without damaging your vehicle or ours!  Bring proper protection from the weather, and enough food and water for everyone in your vehicle.  No alcohol, though; not on the road or on the trail.  If we see you with alcohol, you will be asked to leave.  Also, make sure your vehicle is trail worthy and appropriately equipped for the particular trail.  In other words, don't bring your 31"-tired Jeep to Cimarron Mesa, unless you just came out to watch.  We won't leave you out there to die, but we don't want to spend all day fixing your junk either.  And finally, whether or not you read this disclaimer or sign any waivers or releases of liability, if you ride with the New Mexico 4-Wheelers, and you or your vehicle gets hurt (scratched, dented, bent, broken, or burned to the ground), don't blame us.  Driving your vehicle (both on- and off-road) is dangerous, that's why you buy insurance. If you don't want anything "bad" to happen to your vehicle, leave it in your garage.  While on the trail, if you don't feel comfortable doing a particular obstacle, don't do it!  Take the by-pass or turn around and go home.  If someone else is "spotting" you on an obstacle and something bad happens, it's still your fault.
In summary, you are completely responsible for yourself, your passengers, your vehicle, and the safety of all three!

Notes:

  1. Club Meeting at the Church: During the "winter" months (October thru April), Club Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month (except for December) at 7:00 p.m., at the Heights Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Academy and Moon, which is east of Wyoming.

  2. Club Meeting at Member's House: During the "summer" months (May through September), as well as the Christmas Party (December), Club Meetings are held at one of our member's houses usually on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 5 pm (check the schedule above for the actual date).  It's a potluck affair, so bring a dish to share.  Also bring your lawn chair and eating utensils.  Maps and directions will be posted on the Member's Only Page approximately 2 weeks prior to the meeting.  Guests interested in attending, please contact the webmaster for directions.

  3. Special Event: Additional information on "Special Events" is available on the Member's Only Page.  However, that doesn't mean that guests aren't welcome to participate in these events!  If you don't have access to the Member's Only Page, and want more information, please e-mail the webmaster.

  4. SWFWDA Summer Quarterly:  The NM4W will host the 2008 Summer Quarterly in Salida, Colorado.  The host campground will be Chalk Creek Campground and RV Park.  Camping spaces are limited and will fill up months in advance.  Make your reservations as soon as possible.  The phone number to the campgrounds is on their web site at http://www.chalkcreek-campground.com/.  Make sure you tell them you are attending the Quarterly!

  5. Zuni Mountain Campout with Jeeps West of Gallop:  Our friends at Jeeps West have invited us to come, eat, sleep, and Jeep with them again this year.  This weekend always gets rave reviews.  Camping and staging will again be at the Wildlife Building.  Wheeling will most likely will be on the 16th and you don't have to have a Jeep to join in on the fun!!!  Jeeps West will do the burgers and dogs and everyone can fill in with their favorite sides just like last year. On Friday evening they will provide a grill that everyone is welcome to use to cook their favorite meat, etc. on and just do a kind of meet & greet same as last year. A lso there will be some members of the Cliffhangers there so should be a really good time. The trail will be similar to last years, i.e., forest pin-stripping, not-to-difficult when dry, not fun when wet. But do expect some scratches, Don't bring the Bling.  Take 1-40 west to Exit 33, then NM 400 South from Ft. Wingate to get there.  Hopefully Jeep’s West still has the signs from last time and will set them out for us again.  This will be dry camping so plan to pack it in and pack it out.  McGaffey Canyon Campground is a National Forest Campground that is about a mile down the road and has a few full hookup spaces if more amenities are desired.  Click HERE for a map.

  6. Mt. Blanca Trip:  Meet at the bottom of the Lake Como road at the Forest Service sign about 3/4 of a mile East of the 150N turnout at 9:00am.  We will camp at Lake Como on Saturday night and go back down the road Sunday morning.  The trail is best suited for vehicles with at least a rear locker and 33" tires or larger.  The Jaws I obstacle near the middle of the trail seems to be getting more difficult each year.  I'll have a 2008 report for those interested at the August meeting.

  7. Red River Trip:  The 26TH is an option.  I might be heading up early to do some pre-running.  From Albuquerque take I-25 north towards Santa Fe turnon SR-599 north to US-285 north to Espanola. In Espanola take SR-68 to Taos go thru Taos SR-68 will turn into SR-522 stay on SR-522 until you get to Questa.  The only stop light in Questa turn right in  SR-38 stay on SR-38 all the way to Red River.  Turn left on Mallette Creek Rd (Its between Sitzmark Sports & the Package Liquor) go past the city park about one mile.  At this point the road will make a sharp left turn.  Do not turn left take the road to the right.  A little ways up the road turns right goes down a little hill across a water crossing (Water ????) then opens up into a open meadow area.  This is where the free camping is.  There are couple of RV Parks in town.  The Red River RV park (800-670-3711) when coming into town on the right has PUBLIC SHOWERS for rent.  Also bring your fishing pole if you like to fish.  Saturday September 27th is FREE FISHING day.  No License needed for Resident or non resident.  All other regulations apply.  We will meet at Mallette Creek Park at 9am Sat & Sun for the trail rides.  Saturdays run will be to Goose lake.  I am planning spending most of the day at the lake fishing and relaxing.  Sundays run will be up to Greene Peak.  Both trails are on the easy side and stock vehicles should have no problem. (This is no lie as all the rocks have been removed from the Goose Lake trail).  If your tent camping remember to bring warm sleeping bags or extra blankets.  Or your tent heater.  It can get down to freezing at night this time of year.  Saturday evening there will be a potluck dinner.  Bring something to share and you own meat.  The Potluck will be held at the Mallette Creek Park just north of town at 5pm on Saturday.  Any questions please fill free to e-mail or call me at 994-2515 (home) or 345-2666 (work).
