History of the New Mexico 4-Wheelers Logos

Back when the club was founded in 1958, it was known as the Albuquerque Jeep Herders.  The Jeep Herder logo was simple.  A profile image of a flat fender Jeep and a Shepard wearing a sombrero standing in front of it.

In the August 1976 newsletter, The club president announced a name change for the club:

"With this issue of the Newsletter, I am proud to announce a new club name voted on by members attending the August 8, 1976, meeting.  The Albuquerque Jeep Herders will now be officially known as the New Mexico 4-Wheelers, Inc.  The reason this step was taken was to encourage potential new members who have the misconception that one must own a JEEP to become a JEEPHERDER, and to sooth anti-Jeep feelings among friendly competitors.  The only vehicular requirement to join the club is that you own a 4-wheel drive vehicle.  Hopefully all those Broncos, Scouts, LandCruisers, Blazers, Ramchargers, ETC. will come out of hiding and make themselves known and participate in some of our 4 wheeling antics.  Our little JEEPHERDER friend will continue with us in our new name just so ties with the old title will not be severed completely."

Here is an example of the first New Mexico 4-Wheelers logo.

Then, the club transitioned to the current full color club logo in the early 1990's.  This logo still contains the original Jeep Herder's logo atop one of the mesas.  The backdrop displays snow capped mountains which signifies the club's frequent trips to the mountains in northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.  The logo also includes a Jeep CJ, a Ford Bronco, and a Toyota Land Cruiser which depicts the diversity of vehicles within the club.  All of this in the center of the Zia Sun symbol which is THE New Mexico Icon!  This logo was hand drawn by a past club member. Due to health issues, she left us too early in life and through this logo her legacy within the club will never be forgotten.

This logo has been used in full color on shirts, patches, stickers, etc.  Over the years, a monochrome version of this logo was made for low cost production of shirts and other items.

In 2008, the club celebrated its 50th Anniversary and a special logo was made to commemorate the occasion which incorporated the full color logo.

Several other variations have been used over the years as well.

2018 Marks the 60th Anniversary for the club.  The historian created this logo to commemorate the occasion.
