EVENT COMPLETED

The NM 4 Wheelers have a special opportunity in April to combine community service and their passion for off-road vehicles.

The Central NM Community College [CNM] Automotive Technology [AT] Program is holding the annual SkillsUSA State competition this year on Friday the 12th of April 2024.  It is at the main campus of CNM at 7:00am [at Coal SE & University SE]. It usually ends around 1:00pm, followed by lunch if you want to stay.

SkillsUSA is a nation wide partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure that America has a skilled workforce.  A nonprofit national education association, SkillsUSA serves middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. The winners of this state competition will advance to the national competition in Atlanta Georgia.

The head of CNM's AT Program, Barry Mills, has put out a request through me for volunteers from NM 4 Wheelers to participate as proctors for this SklllsUSA event. CNM is seeking at least ten (10) and hopefully more New Mexico 4 Wheelers members to volunteer to help for this SkillsUSA competition on April 12th.

Volunteers do not need any experience nor previous knowledge of particular automotive subjects.  Proctoring this event involves administering a pre-developed test [usually multiple choice] at one of 35 stations that assess basic competence in various subjects within automotive technology.  The volunteers stay at the same station throughout the morning.  The students revolve through each station to answer the timed test questions pertaining to its topic.  The volunteer proctors are given the answer key to the standardized questions so that they can score each student's answer sheet.

After the testing is completed, lunch is provided by CNM for the proctors and students.

In addition to serving as proctors for this community, our NM 4 Wheelers can also bring their own off-road vehicles and display them inside the large auto shop, to add to the interest and excitement for the students testing there.

I have volunteered for the last two years and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I am doing it again this year.

We will meet at 7:00am outside the trades buildings (Ted Chavez Hall).

If you can, please sign up!  It will be fun and is a very worthy cause.  If you need more information, please contact me by email or call me at 505-249-1130.
