In a male-dominated sport, sometimes the girls gotta take the wheel! A number of our NM4W ladies, and some of our favorite guys too, explored Joaquin Mesa. This is an area just past Gilman Tunnels, off FR376 in the Jemez. The last time I was on a Club run on Joaquin Mesa was sometime around 2009-2010ish. It is a beautiful area we needed to explore again!
We aired down at Walatowa and took it slow getting to the trail. The day started with a fun little climb up onto the mesa. After that, it was largely meandering down little forest tracks.
The day took an adventurous turn at lunch, when it was realized that one rig was developing severe transmission issues, followed not long after by severe brake issues.
As we always do, New Mexico 4 Wheelers pulled together to figure out how to get this rig off the trail and home safely. While I had hoped we would be airing up by about 3 p.m., most folks didn't manage to head home until early evening. A few didn't make it home until 9:30 or later.
There will be a 2.0 to this run - an adjoining mesa that needs trails cleared and to be explored again!
*AND there were two birthdays on this run - I figured out a couple of months ago that Jack Dickey and I are fellow Libras sharing the same birthday, Oct 5. Despite the unexpected adventures, I can't think of a better way to spend a birthday than with my NM4W peeps! :-)
Historian Editorial:
What Mary is talking about is actually Nacimiento Ridge, not Joaquin Mesa. Joaquin canyon and the routes around the actual Joaquin Mesa never made it on the MVUM.
